BitRiver Rus becomes first Russian company with a net zero carbon footprint

Bratsk (Irkutsk region), February 15, 2022. BitRiver Rus, the largest data center operator in the CIS for the colocation of equipment for energy-intensive and blockchain computing, was issued a positive opinion on the verification of its report on greenhouse gas emissions, drafted in accordance with the requirements of ISO 14064-1: 2006.

Verification of the H2 2021 report was conducted by UK-based BSI, and confirmed that direct emissions (Scope 1) and indirect emissions (Scope 2) for the CO2 element are equal to zero. The calculation of greenhouse gas emissions is based on the use of international renewable energy certificates (I-RECs) confirming the company's consumption of electricity generated by renewable energy sources. All this is a natural result of the business development strategy pursued by BitRiver Rus in accordance with ESG principles, which hinges on a responsible attitude toward the environment, social responsibility and high-quality corporate governance.

“We’re committed to facilitating the digital green energy transition of the Russian Federation and we are meeting this challenge successfully. Our largest data center in Bratsk runs on alternative energy, complies with global best practices and does not cause any harm to the environment. A positive opinion on zero greenhouse gas emissions from an international auditor may be considered, without exaggeration, a watershed event for the industry,” said Igor Runets, CEO of BitRiver Rus.

“This was an unusual project - Verification of the report on zero GHG emissions in H2 2021; it is also unique in that BSI had not yet carried out such work in Russia. I am pleased to see that Russian companies also have the opportunity to use a market approach when calculating indirect energy emissions of an organization, which allows them to actually validate their environmental priorities. Overall, the trend towards including climate agenda in the strategies of companies, as well as transparency in reporting on their own emissions, points to the elevated status of this issue at the international and Russian levels,” David Fardel, CEO of BSI MS CIS, Country Manager for BSI France.

The Russian company BitRiver Rus has experienced rapid development for more than five years. The scope of services provided last year tripled compared to 2020, and this figure increased by 30% in January 2022 compared to the year-earlier period. The company currently manages five proprietary data centers built from scratch, as well as 15 projects in the implementation phase both in Russia and abroad. The total power consumption of BitRiver Rus data centers is 300 MW, and it will increase by over six-fold by the end of 2022.
